With a wealth of options for international study across the globe, it can be hard to decide which country you want to devote your time and effort to. However, when it comes to study destinations, Canada remains one of the most popular for international students. Why pack your bags and fly to Canada? Here are several reasons you might decide to pursue a degree, diploma, or certificate in the Great White North.
Why Study in Canada?
Quality of Life
Canada has been ranked as having the highest quality of life in the world since 2020. This ranking is based largely on the safety, political stability, environmental quality, quality of education, health care, and freedoms afforded to the population. In addition, according to the OECD Better Life Index, Canada ranks high in terms of life satisfaction.
Affordable Tuition
Studying abroad can be expensive, but Canada offers lower tuition than other popular study destinations, like the United States. According to a study that looked at the average tuition rates based on the 10 largest universities in various countries, Canada’s average international student tuition is $16,749 USD, whereas the USA’s average tuition is $24,914 USD.
Work Life Balance
According to the OECD Better Life Index, Canada ranks high in terms of work life balance. On average, full-time workers devote 14.6 hours on workdays to personal care and leisure. This means that outside of work, people often have time to not only get enough sleep, but also socialize and enjoy hobbies.
Nature
If there’s one thing that Canada is synonymous with, its nature. Ontario alone has more than 250,000 lakes which contain one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, making it a great region to engage in water sports like canoeing and swimming during the summer, and skating during the winter. What really separates Canada’s nature from other destinations, though, is the level of seclusion. When camping or hiking, it is not hard to access untapped wilderness where you won’t see any other people.
Cultural Diversity
Canada is a country founded on immigration, making it culturally diverse and welcoming to newcomers. According to the Stats Canada Census, the country has 250 different ethnic origins. This means you can enjoy a rich cultural experience while studying in Canada, but also have easy access to all the comforts of the cuisines of your own country.
Universal Health Care
Canada offers universal public health care for citizens and holders of permanent residence, meaning most health care and emergency medical services do not need to be paid for. With that said, international students will only have access to this system once they attain PR, so it is important to arrange for health insurance if needed.
Safety
Canada ranks as one of the safest countries in the world, according to the Global Peace Index. This ranking is largely based on low crime rates and lack of internal conflicts. Canadians are also known for their friendliness, open mindedness, and politeness, which contribute to making a safe environment.
Work & Study at the Same Time
With various options to work on campus, off campus, in co-op programs, students can support themselves while studying. Despite the pandemic, Canada’s unemployment rate has reached only 6%, a number expected to decrease as the economy continues to reopen and more jobs become available.
Please note that only students attending certain designated learning institutions, such as Fleming College Toronto, can access Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
