Digital Footprint – The Secret Job Market Tool

Digital Footprint – The Secret Job Market Tool

In today’s digital age, our lives have become intertwined with technology; to some, without realizing it, we’re creating digital footprints. While having a digital footprint can be beneficial in many ways, such as building an online presence or connecting with others, it can also have a negative impact on your career if you aren’t thinking about what you put out on the internet. In this blog, we will explore how your digital footprint can affect your job search and how you can manage it effectively.

What Is a Digital Footprint?

A digital footprint is a trace of what you leave online; this includes our social media activity, internet browsing history, and other digital interactions we engage in. Anything you put on the internet you have to assume will stay on the internet.

How Does My Digital Footprint Look?

Everyone’s digital footprint can look different. Some like to keep more things to themselves, so there won’t be a lot of information about them on the internet. But some might not see a problem in expressing themselves online. Even though that’s not a problem, people need to understand the possibilities they might face when they put content on the internet that others may not agree with.

Digital Footprint in the Job Market

Your digital footprint can significantly impact your job search if you aren’t conscious of what you put out on the internet. It’s not uncommon for employers to conduct online research on candidates before making a hiring decision. With a simple internet search, an employer will be able to learn more about you and what you can bring to their company. Your digital footprint can impact your job search in the following ways:

Reputation: Your digital footprint can influence your reputation and potential employers’ perception of you. If you have a history of posting inappropriate or offensive content online, it can have significant damage, making you less desirable to the job market.

Professionalism: Employers are looking for candidates who showcase professionalism in and out of the workplace. Though what you do outside of your job shouldn’t align with your job, employers still look for candidates that don’t have a negative imprint on the internet, as it can potentially affect the employer if a situation arises.

How Long Can a Digital Footprint Last?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as an expiration date for your digital footprint. The internet is constantly growing, and it’s grown to a product that, realistically, no one has complete control over. You can personally remove the imprint of yourself if you do it by yourself, but even then, there’s no guarantee that that specific piece of information of you won’t return.

How to Manage Your Digital Footprint

Though what you put on the internet won’t be entirely erased, you still are able to manage while also maintaining what you put on the internet. Here are some steps to manage and maintain your digital footprint effectively.

  1. Google Yourself – There’s no shame in Googling yourself, especially if it can help you positively in the job market. If there is anything negative or unprofessional, take the proper steps to remove it or hide it from the public view. This might be a long process since how you were years ago may differ from who you are now.
  1. Be Mindful of What You Post – Before posting anything online, ask yourself if it’s something you want a potential employer to see. If the answer is no, don’t post it. Be mindful of your use of language, tone, and content, and ensure that it aligns with your professional image.
  1. Build a Positive Online Presence – Building a positive online presence can help you stand out in the crowded job market. LinkedIn has become the #1 platform that employers use to research candidates. Create a LinkedIn profile and engage with others in your industry. Use the platform to highlight your professionalism.
