As a student and newcomer to Canada, being adaptable to change is an essential employability skill to have in the Canadian workplace. Employers want employees who are flexible, willing to change, and make progress in a labour market that is constantly evolving due to trends in demographics, the economy, and technology.
That’s where career services comes in. We strive to assist and provide you with the right tools so you can succeed in your job seeking journey during college. Let’s take a closer look at some of the ways we can help.
Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interviews
The first step to acquiring a job in Canada consists of developing an appropriate resume and cover letter, followed by practicing for interviews, gathering documentation, and preparing for your future.
Through our 1:1 sessions, our Career Services team can help you book an excellent Canadian resume that is formatted correctly, which is crucial to landing an interview. With your experience and educational qualifications, Canadian companies will also look at your long-term career goals and objectives.
To help you become successful with your interview, we will set up Mock Interview sessions with you to help you target your employment options and provide you with information about career fairs and job searching sites like Isempower.
Devant Career Support Portal
Career Services also offers a great resume builder tool called Devant to help you successfully showcase your skills and experiences in the Canadian job market. It includes a suite of job search tools that provides students with the knowledge, resources, and connections to successfully showcase your skills and experiences.
Devant comes equipped with a network of professionals and experts who host regular live interactive workshops, Q&As, and panels on a variety of career development topics so that you can arm yourself with top industry information and advice.
Job Board
Career Services also offers an extensive list of available resources and jobs in our well-maintained job board through our CANVAS portal. These Canadian positions are frequently updated, so it would be well worth the time to look at this database in CANVAS and participate in our weekly Workshops and Webinars, which are designed to develop your hard and soft skills further.
Workshops
At times, it becomes a little challenging to overcome the culture shock in a short time and secure employment without being able to understand the norms to communicate effectively. For this reason, it would be beneficial to attend our workshops.
Our workshops include the following topics:
- Employment And Human Rights Law (with guest experts).
- Dress for Success.
- Competitive Labour Market information.
- LinkedIn Headshot Event to help you get noticed by employers online.
Career Fair
We hold career fairs every semester that offer a wide range of job opportunities, including internships, full-time jobs, summer jobs, and part-time jobs. This is a great opportunity to put into practice all the skills you’ve received during our 1:1 sessions.
Check your emails regularly for updates about when the next career fair will be. Visit our CANVAS portal for Career Fair preparation tips on what to do before, during and after the career fair, such as how to prepare questions to ask employers, ice breakers, personal/elevator pitches and how to prepare to talk about your skills and experiences.
